Sometimes it feels hard to understand and navigate your emotions. Emotions may sometimes run erratic and create havoc in your day to day life. It may feel like you are losing control of yourself and your thoughts, when you start to feel emotions that you don't know the cause of. Often it may also seem like nobody understands you and vice versa. So how do you learn to surf through the tides your emotions bring?

Before getting into it, I just want to tell you that everything you feel is valid, and it is totally okay to ask for help, professional or otherwise.
So, when you feel like you are unable to understand your emotions, the best thing to do is sit with them.
Sit with your emotions. Let them flow through you, let them be. Try to focus on your breathing and just be present at that moment.
After your breathing eases, try to think about what triggered this emotion in you. Was it something you did yourself? Or was it something someone else did to you?
Being in the presence of your emotion is good. Every emotion you feel is valid. Do not make yourself feel small about something you are feeling.
Now you know what you are feeling and why you are feeling it.

At this point you can either make the decision to let gently let go of this emotion or sit with it for few more moments. Both of which are absolutely fine. Letting go gently means that you are no longer affected by what caused it or that you no longer want to feel this way.
Understand that sitting and dealing with your emotions is very essential to move forward. It is okay to vent, to cry, to write or to talk to someone about how you are feeling. Let it out in a way that feels healthy to you. Journaling is one of the most effective ways to look into your emotions better. Writing everything that comes to your mind at that moment will help you get in touch with your emotions better. Try doing this the next time you feel overwhelmed by your emotions.

Know that feeling this way doesn't make you weak or less worthy. It is normal and everybody goes through bad days every once in a while.
The key to handling the turbulent days is to forgive and love yourself through it all. To love yourself even when you aren't feeling the best. To understand that your love towards yourself must be unconditional, through thick and thin.
Feelings are something you have, not something you are.
