According to the American Psychological Association, anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure. And according to a survey conducted by The Hindu in 2020, 88 percent of Indians reported anxiety amongst 10,000 who were surveyed.
With the fast-paced world that we live in, we are constantly under a certain type of pressure that makes us question our worthiness. And with social media playing such a huge role in our lives, it becomes almost impossible not to compare our lives to strangers, even those who live thousands of miles away from us. But it is important to remember that social media also helps us to connect with people going through the same thing, to know that we are not alone in this.
Let us first take a look at the signs and symptoms anxiety may present with. Because a lot of times, many of us are not even able to recognize its presence in our lives;
> Breathlessness
> Sudden increase in heart rate
> Feeling restless
> Sweating
> A sense of impending danger
> Fatigue
These are only a few symptoms and it is essential to remember that not every body reacts in the same way.
FIVE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT BELIEVE IN YOUR ANXIETY:
Anxiety Lies. Plain And Simple: Anxiety makes us believe that we are not worthy, not worthy of love, not worthy of success, not worthy of attention. All of which is simply not true. Every single person is worthy. Regardless of their age, sex, gender, or race.
You Are Not Your Thoughts: While thoughts may be crucial in shaping you as a person, they don't define you. Everybody has bad days and negative thoughts that doesn't mean they are a bad person. The thoughts you get when you are anxious are stemming from a place of previous trauma but they are not true and nor do they define the present person that you are.
You Control Your Thoughts. Not The Other Way Around: The next time, you are having anxious thoughts, first take a deep breath in and then firmly think about stopping them. I know that it is easier said than done, but it is worth a try. The moment you start to say," No you are wrong, I am worthy," to your thoughts, there is going to be a phenomenal change in your life.
One Situation Does Not Define Your Whole Life: Anxiety usually stems from a stressful situation in our surroundings or the future. And at times like this, it becomes so important to remind ourselves that this one particular situation or event is not going to define our entire life. We always have the power to shape our lives into how we desire them to be. Always.
It Is Rarely As Bad As It Seems: We often tend to exaggerate the problem at hand more than it actually is. While thinking of a present problem or situation, we add our previous experiences with stressful situations and pile it all up. I am in no way saying that our problems are not valid. All I am saying is that if take a few moments to detach ourselves from the problem and see it from afar, it may not look as scary as it seems to be.
I have told this before and I am telling this again, it is OKAY to take help. If you are feeling like you are unable to get a hold of your anxiety, talk to your loved ones or a healthcare professional. None of us are alone in this.
